About Young Living Essential Oils
Young Living Essential Oils is a Utah based MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) company selling essential oils and related products. What is MLM? Read my other article about MLM to find out.
The company was founded by Gary Young in 1993. He is a true believer in the healing power of herbs and plants. As such, also the power of essential oils.
One of the outstanding features of the products is the distillation process that produces the Young Living Essential oils. They are processed in a slow steam extraction procedure. This creates pure oils effectively, without any unwanted adulteration.
The business opportunity offer here is to become one of their independent distributors, and promote and sell their products.
What Are Young Living Essential Oils Products?
Basically, there are four product categories. They are as follows:
Essential Oils and Blends that has essential oils, essential oil blends, roll-ons, massage oils, collections, dietary essential oils, and accessories.
Healthy and Fit is a category with multivitamins, antioxidants, age-based nutrition, joint & mobility, system solutions, liquid wellness, weight management, energy & stamina, and healthy snacking.
Personal Care offers products that are anti-aging, hair care, oral care, body care, life balance, and kids care.
Then lastly there are the Diffusers & Accessories comprising Diffusers & Tools as well as Books & Literature.
The first 3 categories claim to have the following properties:
Physical and psychological benefits
Improves immunity to many ailments
Relieves pain naturally
Reduces stress and anxiety
Helps relieve insomnia
Safeguards against influenza and common colds
Eases digestive order
Basically, Still MLM
I remember the first time I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils. It was at a place that offered free meditation. Before the meditation started, the facilitator offered the Young Living Lavender Oil to everyone. Just a whiff or a drop or two into the palms then dabbed behind the ears would help to relax us, she said. And would enhance our meditation experience.
Did the Lavender Oil really help? I could not truly say. After all, the dim lights, quiet environment, and soothing music were conducive enough to facilitate meditation.
After the meditation, people of course were curious about the essential oil. And that was when the facilitator started to promote Young Living Essential Oil. She would invite those interested to attend a friendly and informal talk about all the products.
The Lavender Oil was the bait, and we were all hooked. At the friendly and informal talk, she introduced Young Living Essential Oils, and signed all of us up as her downline.
So, there you have it. This was one of the ways they recruit people. Basically, this is still an MLM. As a distributor, you can sell direct to customers, but you can make more money (potentially) when you recruit people to join and become your downline. Just like what this distributor did.
There are pros and cons inherent in this type of business. You can read the pros and cons above.
Cost to Join Young Living Essential Oils
The Basic Starter costs $40. That is the minimum for you to join Young Living Essential Oils. There is also option to purchase the Basic Starter Plus that costs $75, or the Premium, which is $160.
* Note – prices can change over time. Best to find out from their website for current pricing
The above kits has business cards, brochures, printed literature to educate people on the benefits of their products. Sounds like a lot but really there is nothing much. I don’t remember the business cards. There were only a copy or two of brochures and printed literature. You have to scan and print more on your own. This is additional business costs.
Plus, don’t forget – You have to make a minimum amount of monthly purchases of Young Living Essential Oils products in order to qualify for any commissions. To me, this was the hard part. I mean, besides money spent per month to upkeep the account, how many essential oils does one need and how much of it can we use up in a month?
How Does One Make Money from Young Living Essential Oils?
As mentioned, you can sell direct to customers. As distributors, you get 24% discount on all products. Every customer you sell direct to, you earn that 24% amount. That is quite a hefty profit. The problem is the ability to sell direct to consumers, and the cost to do so.
Alternatively, and this is what all MLMs prefer, you recruit people as downline and receive commissions and bonuses from people who are in your downline.
The compensation plan at Young Living Essential Oils is complicated, as with any MLM. Here is a summary of what you can earn:
Earn Commission from downlines
Distributor gets 8% of sales from the first level of people recruited. Then 5% from the people recruited by the first level. They also get 4% on the third level, that is the people recruited by the second level.
Fast Start Bonus
Distributors get 25% commission during the first three months if the people they recruited make purchases.
Member Starter Kit Bonus
Distributors get $25 for every one they manage to sign up, and they buy the Premium Member Starter Kit.
Generation Leadership Bonus
There is this ranking called Leadership, and when a distributor achieves that, they get 6% monthly commissionable sales made by Young Living Essential Oils.
Rising Star Team Bonus
When your whole team achieves a set of specific requirements, you get this bonus. How much? This is not clear.
When you reach the Silver ranking, you get an additional 2% commission on certain sales stemming from your group. When any team member also achieves the Silver status, you get a bonus of 3%/
Diamond Profit Sharing Pool
The Diamond level earns you shares of 0.5% from Young Living’s commissionable sales.

Training and Support for Distributors
Many MLM does very little to help the distributors to succeed. Young Living Essential Oils is no different. When I first joined, I felt that lack of help and support from them. The facilitator was of not much help, too. She was more keen on signing up new people for her downline than to help her downline succeed.
Sure, you can buy the starter kit. But honestly, I have bought it before. It is just a set of oils that you are encouraged to use and experience so that you can sell better. And, as mentioned above, there is a set of brochures that you will have to either scan and distribute as soft copy or scan and print your own for your business.
There is no much training provided. No courses to teach you how to set up your own website for your new business. No courses to teach you how to promote the products offline and online.
There is no training on how to recruit people and build your downline as well as support them so that they will succeed. If you don’t have the tools to succeed, how are you going to lead your team to success?
As with any business, there will be some complaints. I am saying this to be fair. Even to Young Living Esssential Oils.
Some complaints can be due to people being misinformed on how to use the products correctly. For example, drinking it instead of applying it.
Also, like any product, results will vary from using the products. They may work on some people. They may not work on some people. Some may even have bad experience from using the products.
Personally, I never had any problems with the products. At the same time, to be honest, there were also never any real true benefits from using the products. What I experienced from the products, I found in later years to be able to experience the same from other essential oil products.
There is some controversy here. Some reports have proposed that Young Living Essential Oils uses synthetic fragrances. You can Google to research on this. Listen to both sides, and make up your own mind about this.
There are also reports on how some sites selling the products make untrue claims such as the oils can fight Ebola. Again, you can Google and research on this. You will see proof of this.
Plus, investigations by Dr Eva F Briggs, M.D. have found Gary Young’s background and claims to be questionable. Her reports from her investigations are available on the Internet. Just search for it.
They have received a Warning Letter from FDA in September 22, 2014.
The warning letter mentioned some of Young Living Essential Oils were promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs under section 201(g)(1)(B) of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This was because Young Living had promoted them for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease.
Besides the concerns and issues mentioned above, what about the people who tried this business? Did they succeed?
This is a common problem with MLM. It is a well known fact that only 3% to 4% of the people who join an MLM organization succeed and make enough to do it as a full time career.
Most would try, and find themselves paying more to the MLM business than earning. That was what I realized after a few years with Young Living Essential Oils. I cut my losses and made a quick exit.
What Others Say About Young Living Essential Oils
Here are some videos of people, and their views of Young Living Essential Oils. You can search on YouTube to learn more truth about this company.
Shocking Video! This lady (a former Young Living member just like me) found out that Young Living uses Mink Oil in this product! Watch the video now!
Young Living Essential Oils – The Passive Online Revenue Final Word
So, after all that has been said, the important question now is – is Young Living Essential Oils legitimate? Here is my verdict.
VERDICT: Legit – not totally a scam.
You may be surprised by my verdict, right? After all I have said against the business, why did I still say they are legit, and not a scam?
Well, first of all, there are tangible products. Products that people can buy. And they can build a business around these products. Also, Young Living is a business. Unfortunately, an MLM business.
And even more unfortunate, lately more and more of their bad business practices have been revealed (watch videos above). Plus, the issue with FDA.
But the true question here is – Can people succeed with such a business?
The answer from me is a firm – Definitely Not!
To me, these are all feel good products. There is no scientific proof that they really work. Also, as I have said many times before, to me, MLM is never the best way to start or do a business. And Young Living Essential Oils is a MLM company. (Read my article To Learn What is MLM? And learn why it is not a good choice to start or do a business)
The success rate of people doing MLM is low. As reported in my article about MLM, the failure rate is 95%!
So, should you join Young Living Essential Oils? – Definitely Not!
If you are like me, and not keen on MLM, or nervous about Young Living Essential Oils and FDA’s watch on it, here’s a better alternative:
If you have ANY questions about this review – What Is The Young Living Essential Oils – Scam? (my true experience), ANY at all, please submit your questions as comments below. I will be happy to help out.
I have had my fair share of experience with MLM, also known as Multi Level Marketing. I was with Young Living, Unity, encountered Amway plus many more. In this article I will explain What Is MLM, how they work, and most importantly – can people really make lots of money from this?
What Is MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)?
The first time I heard about MLM was back in the 1980s. There was buzz about something called network marketing.
That sounded good to me because I thought it was about networking for my then fledgling career.
I was so young and naïve.
I soon learned that it was actually Multi Level Marketing. Other names were pyramid selling, referral marketing, etc.
I also learned that there is no real job. Although titles such as distributors, salespeople, independent business owners are given to those who joined the company.
Nice titles. Especially the title of business owner. I was attracted to the idea of owning my own business. Who doesn’t want to be a business owner? Who doesn’t like the idea of making lots of money?
I know I did. But I soon found out otherwise.
How Does the MLM Business Model work?
An MLM business sells products or services. But unlike other businesses, there is hardly any form of marketing in the sense of advertising by the company itself. Most of the marketing and selling is done by independent non-salaried participants who join the business as distributors (also called associates, independent business owners, independent agents, etc).
From my experience, how they work is like this. A participant joins the MLM business. In order to join, they have to purchase the products or services. The common sales pitch to convince them to buy is such as – After all, if you are going to sell something, you have to try it yourself, right?
After the participant is a member of the MLM, they are encouraged to ‘introduce’ others to join the MLM company, just like them. Of course, if they like, they can simply sell the products to consumers. But the prices will be higher. MLM companies like to proudly declare that their products are cheaper than similar products in the market because they do not spend money on marketing or advertising. But then again, strangely, the prices are higher if you are not a member of the MLM company.
When participants sell products direct to consumers, they get retail profit plus commission from the company. But, when they ‘introduce’ people to the business, and these people join, they become this participant’s downline. And after that, any product or service sold by the participant’s downline will result in commission for the downline as well as the participant.
This means that the participant gets commission from sales done by their downline. This is the pyramid in MLM’s multiple level structure of compensation.
Another thing to note is that anyone that the participant’s downline recruits will also be in the participant’s pyramid. How far down it goes defers in different MLM organizations.
When selling the idea of this revenue stream, participants often pitch is as being a business owner. Also, the idea of growing their own downline is another attractive carrot. Unfortunately, this revenue stream, is also the least statistically probable source of remuneration to a salesperson. So is the probability of direct sales of the participant’s own personal sales.
How do participants of MLM earn?
As a distributor, salesperson or whatever title they give you, know that there is no salary paid.
Then how do participants make money?
First, they join the MLM company. They usually will need to buy some of the products to qualify as a member and be allowed to sell the products.
They sell directly to end user retail consumers. This is through relationship referrals or word of mouth marketing. I know of some who conduct events that are free to attend or free talks to educate people on the product
s. During either of these, there will be promotion of the products and people are encouraged to join the MLM company. The latter is more important as those who join will become their down line distributors.
There usually is a strong incentive to recruit others to join the MLM.business, and become their down line. This is because besides the sales commissions from direct retail customers, they also get commissions from sales made by their down line.
Can You Make Money with MLM?
A study by the Federal Trade Commission reported that at least 99% of people who join MLM companies lose money.
So why do people still join MLM?
This is because people are led to believe that they can make lots of money from selling the products. During the introduction, such as a preview seminar or one to one discussion, MLM companIes focus on the potential earnings one can achieve. They use participants who made millions as examples. And they tell you that you can do it too.
What they don’t tell you is the statistical improbability of that happening. That many have tried. And many have lost money.
I was one of those who lost money in MLM ventures.
Here are some reports on whether people make money with MLM:
The Times reported that “The Government investigation claims to have revealed that just 10% of Amway’s agents in Britain make any profit, with less than one in ten selling a single item of the group’s products.”
“UK Justice Norris found in 2008 that out of an IBO [Independent Business Owners] population of 33,000, ‘only about 90 made sufficient incomes to cover the costs of actively building their business.’ That’s a 99.7 percent loss rate for investors.” – Eric Scheibeler, high level “Emerald” member, Amway
Newsweek reported that based on Mona Vie’s own 2007 income disclosure statement “fewer than 1 percent qualified for commissions and of those, only 10 percent made more than $100 a week.”
In an October 15, 2010 article in USA Today, it was revealed that 30% of MLM company – Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing participants make absolutely nothing. 54% of the rest of the 70% make only $93 a month!
“You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone making over $1.50 an hour, the primary product is opportunity. The strongest, most powerful motivational force today is false hope.” – Roland Whitsell, research professor
As you can see from above, an overwhelming majority of MLM participants end up with either a significant loss or nil net profit. This is after expenses are deducted. It is only the few individuals at the uppermost level of the MLM pyramid that makes an obscene amount of money. And these are the people that the MLM company will focus on. They will quote these cases to convince people to join their organization, telling them that if these people can, so can they. The reality is it will never happen.
While many MLM companies are generating billions of dollars in annual revenue, and hundreds of millions of dollars in annual profit, 90% or more of their participants are operating at a loss.
Promote Your Online Business with Digital Marketing Strategies
In the previous post, I discussed about How To Promote Your Business Online. And in that post, one of the important points about promoting your business is that you need to create awareness. It can be done by Offline Marketing and Online Marketing. In this article, I will discuss with you about Online Marketing, that is How to Promote Your Online Business with Digital Marketing Strategies.
The strategies include SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Blogging, Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, and more.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a strategy rank website and web pages high on search results. The preference is to rank on the First Page of search engines such as Google.
This is because studies like the one done by Chitika have proven that 91.5% of people searching choose websites that are on search results First Page.
Think about it. How often do you look beyond the first page of search results? Very rarely right?
So, when you or an expert you hire does SEO on your website, and you get ranked on the First Page of search results. This is immediately online visibility of your business. People then become aware that your business exists.
After that, there is a very high chance, as stated above 91.5% chance, that people will click and visit your website. This is traffic going to your website. The traffic that goes to your website presents an opportunity for you to engage with the people, convert them into customers and get revenue and sales.
So, how does one do SEO? There is a lot to be done; such as On Page SEO and Off Page SEO tactics such as Off Page Mentions, Backlinks, Article Submissions, Online Press Releases, and so on. I will write a whole article about this as writing it here will result in this article being too long.
Blogging is one of the best ways to promote your online business. Google and other search engines love fresh content. When you have a blog, and you post updates regularly, this can improve your site’s rankings on search results. As mentioned above in the SEO section, high ranking, especially on First Page of search results can boost awareness of your website, and effectively your online business.
But, it is not so simple as just writing a blog. To get ranked, you have to know what keywords people are using to find information like the post you are about to add to your blog. And to know that, you have to do Keyword Research.
There are steps to do effective Keyword Research so that you can find the best keywords for your blog post. How do you do keyword research? How do you choose the right keywords? How do you write using the keywords such that your page gets ranked high?
Do not fret. Wealthy Affiliate University has powerful training that will teach you step by step how to do Keyword Research, how to choose the best keywords for your blog post, and how to add these keywords optimally in your blog post so that you do not get blacklisted for keyword stuffing, and instead get ranked high on search results.
I am sure you have heard of Social Media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn. These media has woven into many of our lives. When social media first appeared, businesses thought it would be just a fad. Then later, the same businesses begin to realize that social media is an opportunity to promote their products and services.
But to use social media to promote a business is not easy. Each social media platform its unique way of posting updates, engaging with community and fans, advertising and converting fans or followers into customers. For example, a post on Facebook cannot be done the same way on Twitter. Twitter has character input limit, and Facebook has none, or none known of so far.
Also, you need to know which social media platform to advertise on so as to get good Return on Investment (ROI). You do not want to spend and keep spending lots of money on advertising, and not get enough sales to even cover the cost!
Video is the future. I have always said that, and today it has been proven to be true.
Videos are outperforming other forms of content. It can increase Brand Awareness. In a study by Device Research, it was found that 92% of all mobile video viewers share the videos with others. This can further your reach and expand the brand awareness for your business.
Videos are also known to have higher engagement and conversions. For example, a Metlife Hong Kong video marketing campaign titled ‘My Dad’s Story: Dream For My Child’ engaged more than 300 million people, with over 27 million views on Facebook and on YouTube, 7 million viewers shared the video, 268 million read about the video through nearly 100 news reports, and 280,000 visited the MetLife microsites in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
The reasons that people enjoy videos are many. For one, they are easy to consume. They appeal to the senses and tugs at the heartstrings. The information communicated is bite-sized that can quickly bring across the important message to the audience.
Lastly, videos can improve SEO. Google owns YouTube. So naturally, including YouTube videos on your landing page will help boost your Google ranking. A research by Forrester Research said that when you have video on your web page, the chances of it getting to the First Page increases by 50 times.
One of the ways for your online business to be successful is to do Email Marketing. When visitors drop by your website, grab the opportunity to capture their contact information. Usually, just their name and email addresses. As you collect more subscribers, you are building a list. This list is very valuable for your business because you can send them emails to encourage them to buy your products or services.
But, it is not so simple as that. You will need autoresponders. You will need to nurture a relationship with your subscribers. Over time, you gain their trust. And you can convert them into long time customers and advocates.
In addition to the strategies mentioned above, there are many more types of Digital Marketing Strategies, such as:
Just too many to write them all here.
One way to learn about it all is to attend courses or workshops. Another is to learn online from a reliable source like Wealthy Affiliate University.
The courses at Wealthy Affiliate University are modular. And they are presented with lessons that include online videos. So, you can learn at your own pace. In addition, there are weekly live training that shares the valuable tips and the latest strategies in the ever changing digital landscape.
Most important of all, this I love the best, is the very helpful and supportive community in Wealthy Affiliate. Any time you have a question, you can ask by submitting a question to the community. Some one or (most times) many will come to your assistance.
If you have ANY questions about this article – Promote Your Online Business with Digital Marketing Strategies, ANY at all, please submit your questions as comments below. I will be happy to help you out.
Also, if you are a current or former member of Wealthy Affiliate, and would like to leave your own review or feedback below, I would love to hear from you, too.
But first, let us understand why it is important to create awareness of your business? On the world wide web, according to Internet Live Stats, there are over 1.5 billion websites on the world wide web (as of April 2018). And this number is increasing daily.
To have a successful business online, to have revenue and sales, you need to make sure that people know your website exists. That is Awareness. You will need to promote your website and drive traffic to it. When visitors show interest, you need to engage them and nurture this relationship. Eventually, the goal is to convert these leads into sales.
As you can see, the first order of the day is to create Awareness. Then Promote Your Business Online so as to achieve sales. These days, there are two main ways of marketing. They are Offline Marketing and Online Marketing.
What is Offline Marketing?
Basically, any form of promotion or marketing done outside of the Internet is considered Offline Marketing. It would include TV Advertisements, Newspaper Advertisements, Print Banner Advertisements, Billboards, Posters, Print Advertisements on Buses and Taxis, plus many more. Even a T-shirt with a logo of a brand is a form of Offline Marketing.
Offline Marketing can reach the masses. But it can also result in wastage. The product or service may be something only a particular group of people or target audience needs. But an advertisement, for example on TV, is seen by lots of people. And out of the large number of people, only a small group belongs to the target group. As such, this results in wastage.
Another factor against Offline Marketing is the cost. The types of Offline Marketing that reaches out to very large groups of people, for example a TV ad or ad on a bus, is very expensive. The ones that are cheaper are not very effective.
Conversions are also not so good with Offline Marketing. How many people do you think will make a purchase of a product after seeing the advertisement on TV, a bus or a billboard? Very few. And that kind of Return on Investment (ROI), for a new business owner or small business owner is not attractive.
As you can see, Offline Marketing is not a good option. I am not saying it is no longer of any use anymore. We still do see TV ads, newspaper ads, ads on buses, trains and cabs, and other forms of Offline Marketing. It still has its usefulness and effectiveness. But cost is a major factor. And as a new business owner, you will be very conscious of costs. It is better to consider Online Marketing, and I will explain why below.
What is Online Marketing?
Online Marketing, also known as Digital Marketing, is when you promote your business on the Internet. It can be done by a variety of methods such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, and many other ways.
It can be done in such a way to reach the masses. The more effective way would be to promote to a specific target audience, one that is the type of consumer who would be interested in your product or service. This is where many digital advertising outshines Offline Marketing. For example, in Facebook, you can create a super targeted audience that would convert very well. What this means is that there is high chances of the audience buying your product or service.
Compared to many Offline Marketing choices, Online Marketing options are comparatively lower in cost. A TV advertisement can cost thousands of dollars. A Facebook advertisement can cost a fragment of that amount. To many small business owners like you and me, that is a very attractive point to note.
Now that you understand more about what Online Marketing is, what are the next steps? The first is to use the Digital Marketing techniques to Create Awareness of Your Business.
Types of Digital Marketing to Promote Your Business Online
There are various types of Digital Marketing techniques that you can use to Create Awareness of your business website, and Promote your products and services. One of the popular tactics is SEO, which is Search Engine Optimization. It is to rank your website as high as possible on search results, preferably on the first page, so that people can find it.
Another type of Digital Marketing include Facebook Marketing and Advertising. This is where you create awareness of your business on Facebook using the Facebook Page. Then you advertise your products to the users on Facebook. Instagram, that is also owned by Facebook, is also another good way to Promote Your Business Online.
There are many more Digital Marketing options for you to consider. They can be promoting your business on Twitter or Pinterest. If your business is targeting other businesses, you may consider LinkedIn. If you have videos, you can upload them to YouTube as another channel of promotion.
The options are plenty. And too many to cover in a small section here. I will write another blog post entirely dedicated to Digital Marketing strategies soon.

Sure, you can hire people to do it. But that can cost money. If you are starting small, even costs like this is good to not spend at this point of time. Earlier, I blogged about What Is An Online Business to help those of you who do not know understand what an online business really means. If that is you, I advise you to read that article first before returning here to read the rest of this post.
I have also blogged about How To Start An Online Business that offers the points for starting it. If you have not read these articles, I highly recommend that you go read them, and then come back here. If you have and are ready, here are the points to note when you are going to create a website for your business.
As mentioned above, in the earlier post – How To Start An Online Business – we covered the initial steps such as Choosing a Niche, Registering the Business, Buying a Domain Name, Getting a Web Hosting Service, Creating a Website, and Executing a Marketing Plan to get Sales.
We covered most of the steps in that blog post, except for the last two. So here we are, at the Create A Website Phase. Hence, this blog post to share with you How To Create a Website For Your Business. The first thing you will need to do is to Choose A Theme.
Choose A Theme
The first thing you will need to do when creating your website is to select a theme.
What is a theme?
It is the design and layout of your website. It is a standard that will define how it will look aesthetically. Just like when you first rent an office space it is just an empty space. You will need to hire an interior designer to create a style that matches your business. It will include things like wall paint colors, furniture designs, styles of furnishings, and everything that makes up how your office will appear to people when they visit your office.
Likewise, a theme is the design, style, look and feel of your website. It can communicate to visitors what type of business you are doing. For example, a corporate business website will choose a corporate theme and will have a very structured and organized look that is professional and business-like.
An a travel website will have a relaxed look and feel with lots of pictures and videos of beautiful places to visit. Here is an example of a travel blog called Asia Travel Gems(see image on the right).
WordPress has a lot of Free Themes to choose from. There are also paid themes that offer more functions and features.
After you have chosen a theme, it is time to look at how your website will be structured.
Imagine your new office. It would have different rooms for different departments right? And also a showroom for visitors to see the products. It is the same for a website. You will need different sections on the website for different areas of your business.
For example, you will definitely need a section to tell your visitors all about you, the history of your business, what you represent, what is your business offering, and even who you are. Then there is the section filled with phone numbers, email addresses and social links called the Contact Us section where people can reach you.
As you can see, there are the main sections. And there are also sub sections. You need to think about how all these sections are arranged on your website.
Above is an example of a Site Architecture.
Content is King. I am sure you have heard this before? What this means is that content rules the internet. Without it, there is nothing on the internet except for blank pages.
For your business, content is important because it is what your visitors will read and consume. It is from the content that the visitors learn about your business, who you are, what you are offering, and what products you are selling.
Content includes your branding, your marketing communications, and even your call to action in your advertisements. You can create the content or you can hire a copywriter to do it.
What is important is that you take a look at your Site Architecture, and figure out what will be the content for each section and each page. Wealthy Affiliate provides excellent training about writing good content as well as how to write content so as to rank high on search results.
You must rank your website and content high on search results, preferably on the first page. This is called Online Visibility, and it is how your target audience can find you, connect with you and convert into your customers.
Product Pages are very important content for your website. Take nice photos of your products. Attractive photos get better conversions.
If you can, create videos featuring your products. Video is the Future of Digital Marketing. Studies have found that people now prefer to watch a video, and when interested they will read the details and information.
Another thing to note is that your product pages must have good copy. This means text that tell visitors about the product and more importantly, what benefits the product gives the consumer. I will write more about this in future blog posts.
Are you ready to be a boss? Do you want to start your own online business that leads to your road to wealth?
I know I was. For years, I was working long hours that led to the success of many businesses. But they were not my businesses. They were other people’s businesses. My efforts helped others make hundreds of thousands of dollars, and some even millions of dollars!
At some point, back in 2014, I decided enough was enough. These companies were making so much money. Why shouldn’t that be me?
Why should I be getting a fixed wage that has a predetermined salary ceiling?
With my own business, no one is going to tell me I can only earn so much a month. It is up to me to work hard, and make as much as possible. Those hundreds of thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars that those companies were making. That could be mine.
But there was a huge obstacle – the capital to start a business.
Rental of an office is expensive in Singapore. And so are salaries of staff. What if I started a business that incurred all these high costs, and the sales and revenue were not enough to cover it? After all, we do business to make money right?
It is known that most businesses take a few years before they finally see profits. I did not have enough capital to tide over a few years.
Then I realized that my forte is in the digital landscape. It dawned upon me that the best option for me is to start an online business.
My Own Online Business
When your store is online, costs are lower. And an online business can reach millions of customers from all over the world. These were just a couple of advantages of an online business. The problem was – while I had years of digital marketing experience, I had no experience in starting an online business.
Undeterred, I started to do research. I spent months and found a few duds. Tried some programs that claim they could help me start an online business easily. Some even claimed they have the get rich formula. Tried them all and ended with nothing.
But I never gave up. I was sure that there must be a legitimate program out there. A program that would work and would help me start my own online business as well as help me succeed. And I found it! It was Wealthy Affiliate.
I followed the training, and here is what I learned:
1. Choose a Niche
The first thing needed to be done is to Choose a Niche that your business will be in. Before choosing a Niche, it is important to know What Is A Niche? Basically, it is a group of people with similar interest. It is a topic that they are passionate about. Seems simple right? But I found it not to be so. There is a lot to consider.
Wealthy Affiliate provides a very good training on What Is A Niche and How To Choose One. Link to the Free Training below.
A business, of course, will have a product (or service) offering. But when I came to this step, what I did not like was the high costs to store and ship products. And if they are your original products, then there is the cost of manufacturing. Plus, the cost of packaging.
There is too much costs for a small and new business. And all that is before you even start running the business and making money from sales!
There is a couple of options that can remove or reduce these costs. It involves selling other people’s products. And the choices are drop shipping and affiliate marketing. I will discuss the latter a little further down this article.
3. Register the Business
Even though your business is online, it is a good idea to register it as a legal business. Every county and city have their unique laws and requirements about registering a business. I suggest you find out from the legal governing body what are the requirements and what needs to be done to register your business and make it official.
Some of you may choose to register later. Again, this all depends on what are the legal requirements in your individual country or city. Do find out.
4. Buy a Domain Name
What is a Domain Name? It is the web address that people will be able to go to in order to visit your business website. The physical world’s equivalent is the actual business address. The domain name is the online address.
If you have a brand name, that can be your domain name. The same for a business name that can be the domain name. If you do not have either, and are thinking of a domain name, do go for something short and catchy. A name that is easy for people to remember.
You can buy a domain name direct from the registry or from a hosting company.
Wealthy Affiliate also has a very thorough training (with training video) about Choosing a Domain Name. Link to the Free Training below.
Remember that the Domain Name is only the web address. Just like a physical business address, it is only an address. You will need a piece of land and a building on that land with that address in order for people to find your business and learn more about you.
The piece of land in the physical world is like the web hosting service. Just as you build a business building on that land, you build a website on the hosting service. Together, you have an online property that people can visit and engage in business with you.
There are many web hosting service providers. Some are free. But if you are serious about running an online business for the long term, I would highly encourage you to consider paying for one. Choose a web hosting service that provides all the tools and services you need to run a website. You will be less likely to run into any problems in the future.
Did you know that Wealthy Affiliate also offers web hosting service? It is one of the most reliable service I know of and has really powerful tools to make your website safe and always running. Find out more Here.
6. Create a Business Website
As mentioned above, the domain name and web hosting service set the stage for your website. Your business website is the all-important factor in your online business. With this, you can inform visitors about who you are, what is your business about, what you are offering, how to contact you, and most vital of all – how to buy your products.
Creating a website includes a lot of steps. Too many to include in this blog post or it will go into thousands of words. I will write another blog post all about How To Create a Business Website. Do subscribe to my newsletter to be updated when this post is published.
7. Get Sales
This is the ultimate purpose of a business isn’t it? I know it is for me. As mentioned from the start, the reason I am doing online businesses is so that I can make the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.
To get sales, you will need to promote your products. Nowadays, most of the marketing activities are also online. There are various digital marketing strategies such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing), Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, and more.
The goal of all these strategies is to drive traffic to your website. When you get a lot of traffic, you have the opportunity to convert visitors to customers. And that is when you get profits from sales.
I wrote an article about What Is Affiliate Marketing? For more details, you can Click Here.
Here, I will give you a summary of what it is. Instead of creating your own products and incurring all the high costs, you can choose to sell other people’s products. And you do not need to buy their products, store them in a warehouse until they are sold.
You simply promote the products on your website.
You are given a unique affiliate ID. And when visitors buy the products through an affiliate link that contains your ID, you earn a commission.

The above is a simple explanation on How To Start An Online Business. As you can see, it can be quite simple, especially when you learn from a powerful training platform like Wealthy Affiliate. To be honest, I would not have started my online businesses if not for Wealthy Affiliate.
Even with my years of digital marketing experience, I found it helpful. Another thing I learned is to not hesitate or procrastinate. The earlier you start your business, the earlier you start to earn. And the earlier you are on your road to success and wealth.
Before Internet, all businesses were done in the physical world. Today, with the arrival of the Internet, businesses can be done online.
What does this mean? What are the types of online businesses? Are you thinking of starting an online business? How can you do it? What are the courses or training available that can teach you how to do it successfully?
All this I will discuss with you in this article titled – What Is An Online Business?
An online business is also known as e-business. Simply put, it is any kind of business activity that happens on the Internet.
A business owner can choose to do it in the physical world (also known as offline), in the world wide web (also known as online), or both offline and online. When a business owner does any or all of their business on the Internet, he or she is doing business online. We can also say that it is an online business.
An online business can include buying or selling a product or service on the Internet. These days, most businesses are found online. And they are from a wide variety of industries.
Today, anyone can start a business on the World Wide Web. You simply start a website and sell a product, service or idea on that website.
An Online Business Is Similar To A Traditional Brick and Mortar Business
Address of the Business
To help you understand more about online businesses, let us see it from a perspective of a traditional brick and mortar business. Let us start with the business address.
In a traditional brick and mortar business, the address would be the physical address where the business is located. On the Internet, there is something similar. It is the URL – the uniform resource locator. It is also known as the web address.
Just like the brick and mortar business’ physical address is how people locate the business in the physical world, the web address is used to locate the online business on the Internet. For example, the URL or web address of Passive Online Revenue is passiveonlinerevenue.com. When you type this in a browser, you will be able to find this website.
Appearance of the Business
When you go to the physical address of a traditional brick and mortar business, you should find the physical structure where the business is running. It can be a building or an office.
In that structure, you will see physical aspects that represent the business; e.g. logos. You will also see physical elements such as doors, decorations, tables, chairs, staff working there, etc. All these in the physical world communicate to you about this business – what they sell, who they are, what is the brand, what is their value proposition, etc.
In the online world, it is about the same, except everything is online. When you reach the website, you will see the ‘front’ of the business, which is the homepage.
Usually, there will be an About page to show and tell you about the business and who are the people representing it. The products and services offered will all be displayed on the website just like how products are displayed in a showroom in the physical world.
And just like in the physical world, the website will have Contact information for you to reach the respective party in the business. Nowadays, with e-commerce, you can even make purchases online. Just like you make purchases at a physical store.
Types of Online Businesses
All online businesses have a website. What type of website it is relates to what type of online business it is. And vice versa.
For example, if the online business is to share a particular topic that the owner is an expert at, then it can be a Blog. If the online business is to sell or buy products and services, then it becomes an Ecommerce website.
Some websites are also strictly just a business front. What this means is that they simply provide information about the business. Any transaction will then be conducted offline, in the physical world.
An example can be a manufacturing plant’s website. The website will feature all the experience and expertise at manufacturing a particular physical product; such as integrated circuit wafers.
A blog is a website that provides information on a particular topic. For example, a travel blog like Asia Travel Gems contains useful information about cities in Asia, and where are the places to see, what are the good local food to try and where to find them as well as which are the good hotels to stay so that a traveler can get a good night’s sleep.
The information is helpful, and visitors drop by the website to consume it. Over time, as the number of visitors grow, the owner of the blog monetizes the site through various methods; such as selling advertising space, Google Adsense, and the best passive income way is Affiliate Marketing.
These days, unless you are living under a rock, you would have come across an Ecommerce online store. These are businesses that sell products, and even services, online. An easy example would be Amazon. It is also called an online marketplace, where you can find many products to buy.
An example of a business selling a service online can be Wealthy Affiliate where you can purchase membership to gain access to the valuable courses there that can teach you how to start on online business and be your own boss.
Today, anyone can go on social media and become An Influencer. As an Influencer, the person can get paid by companies to promote their products and services. For example, an Influencer on Instagram with thousands of followers can get paid a nice sum of money simply by promoting a product or service for a brand.
In this sense, the Influencer has an online business. He or she is providing a service; that is digital marketing, for a client. Some Influencers even have websites to promote their talents further.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Business
There is a lot to consider before starting your own online business. Here are some pros and cons to help you decide which is the best direction and option for you.
Cost Saving – rent, furniture, salary for staff
Greater flexibility and efficiency in product and service delivery
Accessible to consumers all over the world
24/7 availability to consumers
Requires technical knowledge
Requires knowledge about the Internet
Software and hardware expenses
Risks of encountering online scams

It can be said that Affiliate Marketing is one of the ways to truly earn Passive Income. It is where you can wake up the next morning, have your breakfast and coffee as you open your laptop. Then see emails and reports of commissions that you have earned overnight. All the earnings you made while you slept!
Yes, you read it right! This is one of the ways you can make money while you sleep, or while you are at the gym, having a night of fun out with your friends, and even while you are on vacation. The latter actually happened to me.
I was on vacation in Malaysia. Every morning, before going out to see the sights and eat really delicious food, I would check my emails on my laptop. And it was fun to see commissions made while I was asleep as well as out having fun.
So, What is Affiliate Marketing?
In summary, it is to promote other people’s products on your websites. When a visitor makes a purchase of any of the products, you earn a commission. Here’s a definition from Pat Flynn:
Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make – Pat Flynn
Really, this is nothing new. Before Internet, salespeople were already doing this. Except that they did not use a website. They went around, knocking on doors, did some personal selling, sold the products, and they received commissions for all their efforts.
Now, with the Internet, you can Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing, and how to do it easily.
Here’s a more detailed explanation of Affiliate Marketing:
It is actually based on Revenue Sharing. A Merchant, also called an Advertiser, has a product and wishes to sell more of this product. The Merchant offers Affiliate Marketers financial incentives to promote their product or service through an affiliate program.
The First Core Player
So, we have the first core player – The Merchant, or Advertiser. This Merchant or Advertiser can be a company selling a product such as airline tickets or hotel rooms. The Merchant or Advertiser then offers Affiliate Marketers a commission when a customer buys an airline ticket or book a hotel room.
The Second Core Player
The next core player is the Publisher, also known as The Affiliate. This can be an individual or a company. The Affiliate promotes the product of the Merchant or Advertiser on a website. Take a look at this website to see an example of Affiliate Marketing website – Asia Travel Gems.
When someone clicks on an Affiliate Link that is on The Affiliate’s website, and makes a purchase of the product or service on the Merchant’s website, The Affiliate earns a commission.
Most times, the Advertiser will provide The Affiliate with creative communications such as links, banner or text ads. The Affiliate will incorporate these marketing communications on their website. Again, visit this website, and this time notice the banner ads shown – Asia Travel Gems.
The Third Core Player
This is The Customer, also known as The Consumer. They start as a visitor to The Affiliate’s website. Usually, the website has content that is of interest to the visitor. Hence, the visitor visited the website for that reason.
The visitor consumes the content, and sees the links or banner ads. The visitor decides to take action, and clicks on the link or banner ad. This will take them from The Affiliate’s website to The Advertiser’s website.
When the visitor makes a purchase of a product or service on The Advertiser’s website, this is known as a Conversion. This means the visitor has been converted to a Customer.
The Affiliate then gets a commission.
But how does The Advertiser know to give The Affiliate a commission? Let’s talk about Cookies. Not the ones you have with your coffee or tea. This is a digital cookie. Please continue reading for more information about this digital cookie.
The Cookie – How Does It Work?
Firstly, let me explain what is a cookie.
When you sign up at an online site, for example Facebook, you will need to provide a username and password. Usually, below the fields where you fill this information, there is a checkbox that asks if you would like the browser to remember the login details.
When you check that box, you have just added a cookie to your browser. The cookie will remember your username and password for that site. So, the next time you visit the site, the login details will automatically be filled in for you. It is the cookie that does that.
When a visitor clicks on a link at The Affiliate’s website that goes to The Advertiser’s website, the information stored in the cookie is sent to The Advertiser’s website. The information tells The Advertiser who is The Affiliate, and if there is conversion, how much commission to give to The Affiliate.

The Basic membership does not get you much. You will need to upgrade and become a premium member to get more training, applications, limited hosting, and newsgroup access. You will also get extras like link building, blog boot camp, Premium tools, website hosting and PLR content.
Still, the cost of premium is expensive. And there is also the matter of upsells. Yes, you will need to buy more products to get more useful training and tools.

I would like to highlight about support for this program. Don’t be mistaken. You will need support. Especially if you are new to starting your own online business.
You will need great support to help you navigate all the steps required to start your own website, how to find a niche, how to do SEO, and so much more.
The thing is, at Affilorama, while you do get support that is available in the forums and a team of customer service staff, you do not get direct access to Mark Ling. To be fair, he is an extremely busy man. He does drop by occasionally to provide some insights.
The Affilorama Review 2018 – The Passive Online Revenue Final Word
Overall, Affilorama is a good product. Also, it can be acknowledged that Mark Ling is a very skilled and experienced affiliate marketer. But he is not always around. Still, the training and tools are quite good.
So, Is Affilorama A Scam?
No it’s not a scam.
The training in the Premium package is quite good. But the problem with this program is that there are too many upsells. As a beginner, this can be confusing. Also, considering all that is offered in the Premium package, you may find that you are not getting much for your money.
But a word of caution – do not do or use the PLR provided. The articles created using PLR will not rank well as search engines have gotten wise to this strategy to create content. In fact, use of PLR may result in getting your website blacklisted by the search engines, and essentially do harm to your business.
While I say Legit, I must also share with you that there are similar programs out there that offers much more value for money, and is much better in terms of training, service and support. One of them is Wealthy Affiliate. It is my Number One Recommendation for anyone who wishes to start an online business or do affiliate marketing.
If you have ANY questions about this review – The Affilorama Review 2018, ANY at all, please submit your questions as comments below. I will be happy to help out.
