It can be done by Offline Marketing and Online Marketing. In this article, I will discuss with you about Online Marketing, that is How to Promote Your Online Business with Digital Marketing Strategies.
The strategies include SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Blogging, Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, and more.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a strategy rank website and web pages high on search results. The preference is to rank on the First Page of search engines such as Google.
This is because studies like the one done by Chitika have proven that 91.5% of people searching choose websites that are on search results First Page.
Think about it. How often do you look beyond the first page of search results? Very rarely right?
So, when you or an expert you hire does SEO on your website, and you get ranked on the First Page of search results. This is immediately online visibility of your business. People then become aware that your business exists.
After that, there is a very high chance, as stated above 91.5% chance, that people will click and visit your website. This is traffic going to your website. The traffic that goes to your website presents an opportunity for you to engage with the people, convert them into customers and get revenue and sales.

Lastly, videos can improve SEO. Google owns YouTube. So naturally, including YouTube videos on your landing page will help boost your Google ranking. A research by Forrester Research said that when you have video on your web page, the chances of it getting to the First Page increases by 50 times.

But first, let us understand why it is important to create awareness of your business? On the world wide web, according to Internet Live Stats, there are over 1.5 billion websites on the world wide web (as of April 2018). And this number is increasing daily.
To have a successful business online, to have revenue and sales, you need to make sure that people know your website exists. That is Awareness. You will need to promote your website and drive traffic to it. When visitors show interest, you need to engage them and nurture this relationship. Eventually, the goal is to convert these leads into sales.
As you can see, the first order of the day is to create Awareness. Then Promote Your Business Online so as to achieve sales. These days, there are two main ways of marketing. They are Offline Marketing and Online Marketing.
What is Offline Marketing?
Basically, any form of promotion or marketing done outside of the Internet is considered Offline Marketing. It would include TV Advertisements, Newspaper Advertisements, Print Banner Advertisements, Billboards, Posters, Print Advertisements on Buses and Taxis, plus many more. Even a T-shirt with a logo of a brand is a form of Offline Marketing.
Offline Marketing can reach the masses. But it can also result in wastage. The product or service may be something only a particular group of people or target audience needs. But an advertisement, for example on TV, is seen by lots of people. And out of the large number of people, only a small group belongs to the target group. As such, this results in wastage.
Another factor against Offline Marketing is the cost. The types of Offline Marketing that reaches out to very large groups of people, for example a TV ad or ad on a bus, is very expensive. The ones that are cheaper are not very effective.
Conversions are also not so good with Offline Marketing. How many people do you think will make a purchase of a product after seeing the advertisement on TV, a bus or a billboard? Very few. And that kind of Return on Investment (ROI), for a new business owner or small business owner is not attractive.
As you can see, Offline Marketing is not a good option. I am not saying it is no longer of any use anymore. We still do see TV ads, newspaper ads, ads on buses, trains and cabs, and other forms of Offline Marketing. It still has its usefulness and effectiveness. But cost is a major factor. And as a new business owner, you will be very conscious of costs. It is better to consider Online Marketing, and I will explain why below.
What is Online Marketing?
Online Marketing, also known as Digital Marketing, is when you promote your business on the Internet. It can be done by a variety of methods such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, Email Marketing, and many other ways.
It can be done in such a way to reach the masses. The more effective way would be to promote to a specific target audience, one that is the type of consumer who would be interested in your product or service. This is where many digital advertising outshines Offline Marketing. For example, in Facebook, you can create a super targeted audience that would convert very well. What this means is that there is high chances of the audience buying your product or service.
Compared to many Offline Marketing choices, Online Marketing options are comparatively lower in cost. A TV advertisement can cost thousands of dollars. A Facebook advertisement can cost a fragment of that amount. To many small business owners like you and me, that is a very attractive point to note.

As mentioned above, in the earlier post – How To Start An Online Business – we covered the initial steps such as Choosing a Niche, Registering the Business, Buying a Domain Name, Getting a Web Hosting Service, Creating a Website, and Executing a Marketing Plan to get Sales.
We covered most of the steps in that blog post, except for the last two. So here we are, at the Create A Website Phase. Hence, this blog post to share with you How To Create a Website For Your Business. The first thing you will need to do is to Choose A Theme.
Choose A Theme
The first thing you will need to do when creating your website is to select a theme.
What is a theme?
It is the design and layout of your website. It is a standard that will define how it will look aesthetically. Just like when you first rent an office space it is just an empty space. You will need to hire an interior designer to create a style that matches your business. It will include things like wall paint colors, furniture designs, styles of furnishings, and everything that makes up how your office will appear to people when they visit your office.
Likewise, a theme is the design, style, look and feel of your website. It can communicate to visitors what type of business you are doing. For example, a corporate business website will choose a corporate theme and will have a very structured and organized look that is professional and business-like.
An a travel website will have a relaxed look and feel with lots of pictures and videos of beautiful places to visit. Here is an example of a travel blog called Asia Travel Gems(see image on the right).
WordPress has a lot of Free Themes to choose from. There are also paid themes that offer more functions and features.
After you have chosen a theme, it is time to look at how your website will be structured.
Imagine your new office. It would have different rooms for different departments right? And also a showroom for visitors to see the products. It is the same for a website. You will need different sections on the website for different areas of your business.
For example, you will definitely need a section to tell your visitors all about you, the history of your business, what you represent, what is your business offering, and even who you are. Then there is the section filled with phone numbers, email addresses and social links called the Contact Us section where people can reach you.
As you can see, there are the main sections. And there are also sub sections. You need to think about how all these sections are arranged on your website.
Above is an example of a Site Architecture.
Content is King. I am sure you have heard this before? What this means is that content rules the internet. Without it, there is nothing on the internet except for blank pages.
For your business, content is important because it is what your visitors will read and consume. It is from the content that the visitors learn about your business, who you are, what you are offering, and what products you are selling.
Content includes your branding, your marketing communications, and even your call to action in your advertisements. You can create the content or you can hire a copywriter to do it.
What is important is that you take a look at your Site Architecture, and figure out what will be the content for each section and each page. Wealthy Affiliate provides excellent training about writing good content as well as how to write content so as to rank high on search results.
You must rank your website and content high on search results, preferably on the first page. This is called Online Visibility, and it is how your target audience can find you, connect with you and convert into your customers.
Product Pages are very important content for your website. Take nice photos of your products. Attractive photos get better conversions.
If you can, create videos featuring your products. Video is the Future of Digital Marketing. Studies have found that people now prefer to watch a video, and when interested they will read the details and information.
Another thing to note is that your product pages must have good copy. This means text that tell visitors about the product and more importantly, what benefits the product gives the consumer. I will write more about this in future blog posts.

I know I was. For years, I was working long hours that led to the success of many businesses. But they were not my businesses. They were other people’s businesses. My efforts helped others make hundreds of thousands of dollars, and some even millions of dollars!
At some point, back in 2014, I decided enough was enough. These companies were making so much money. Why shouldn’t that be me?
Why should I be getting a fixed wage that has a predetermined salary ceiling?
With my own business, no one is going to tell me I can only earn so much a month. It is up to me to work hard, and make as much as possible. Those hundreds of thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars that those companies were making. That could be mine.
But there was a huge obstacle – the capital to start a business.
Rental of an office is expensive in Singapore. And so are salaries of staff. What if I started a business that incurred all these high costs, and the sales and revenue were not enough to cover it? After all, we do business to make money right?
It is known that most businesses take a few years before they finally see profits. I did not have enough capital to tide over a few years.
Then I realized that my forte is in the digital landscape. It dawned upon me that the best option for me is to start an online business.
My Own Online Business
When your store is online, costs are lower. And an online business can reach millions of customers from all over the world. These were just a couple of advantages of an online business. The problem was – while I had years of digital marketing experience, I had no experience in starting an online business.
Undeterred, I started to do research. I spent months and found a few duds. Tried some programs that claim they could help me start an online business easily. Some even claimed they have the get rich formula. Tried them all and ended with nothing.
But I never gave up. I was sure that there must be a legitimate program out there. A program that would work and would help me start my own online business as well as help me succeed. And I found it! It was Wealthy Affiliate.
I followed the training, and here is what I learned:
1. Choose a Niche
The first thing needed to be done is to Choose a Niche that your business will be in. Before choosing a Niche, it is important to know What Is A Niche? Basically, it is a group of people with similar interest. It is a topic that they are passionate about. Seems simple right? But I found it not to be so. There is a lot to consider.

A business, of course, will have a product (or service) offering. But when I came to this step, what I did not like was the high costs to store and ship products. And if they are your original products, then there is the cost of manufacturing. Plus, the cost of packaging.
There is too much costs for a small and new business. And all that is before you even start running the business and making money from sales!
There is a couple of options that can remove or reduce these costs. It involves selling other people’s products. And the choices are drop shipping and affiliate marketing. I will discuss the latter a little further down this article.
3. Register the Business
Even though your business is online, it is a good idea to register it as a legal business. Every county and city have their unique laws and requirements about registering a business. I suggest you find out from the legal governing body what are the requirements and what needs to be done to register your business and make it official.
Some of you may choose to register later. Again, this all depends on what are the legal requirements in your individual country or city. Do find out.
4. Buy a Domain Name
What is a Domain Name? It is the web address that people will be able to go to in order to visit your business website. The physical world’s equivalent is the actual business address. The domain name is the online address.
If you have a brand name, that can be your domain name. The same for a business name that can be the domain name. If you do not have either, and are thinking of a domain name, do go for something short and catchy. A name that is easy for people to remember.
You can buy a domain name direct from the registry or from a hosting company.

Remember that the Domain Name is only the web address. Just like a physical business address, it is only an address. You will need a piece of land and a building on that land with that address in order for people to find your business and learn more about you.
The piece of land in the physical world is like the web hosting service. Just as you build a business building on that land, you build a website on the hosting service. Together, you have an online property that people can visit and engage in business with you.
There are many web hosting service providers. Some are free. But if you are serious about running an online business for the long term, I would highly encourage you to consider paying for one. Choose a web hosting service that provides all the tools and services you need to run a website. You will be less likely to run into any problems in the future.

6. Create a Business Website
As mentioned above, the domain name and web hosting service set the stage for your website. Your business website is the all-important factor in your online business. With this, you can inform visitors about who you are, what is your business about, what you are offering, how to contact you, and most vital of all – how to buy your products.

7. Get Sales
This is the ultimate purpose of a business isn’t it? I know it is for me. As mentioned from the start, the reason I am doing online businesses is so that I can make the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars.
To get sales, you will need to promote your products. Nowadays, most of the marketing activities are also online. There are various digital marketing strategies such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing), Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Content Marketing, and more.
The goal of all these strategies is to drive traffic to your website. When you get a lot of traffic, you have the opportunity to convert visitors to customers. And that is when you get profits from sales.

Here, I will give you a summary of what it is. Instead of creating your own products and incurring all the high costs, you can choose to sell other people’s products. And you do not need to buy their products, store them in a warehouse until they are sold.
You simply promote the products on your website.
You are given a unique affiliate ID. And when visitors buy the products through an affiliate link that contains your ID, you earn a commission.

When a business owner does any or all of their business on the Internet, he or she is doing business online. We can also say that it is an online business.
An online business can include buying or selling a product or service on the Internet. These days, most businesses are found online. And they are from a wide variety of industries.
Today, anyone can start a business on the World Wide Web. You simply start a website and sell a product, service or idea on that website.
An Online Business Is Similar To A Traditional Brick and Mortar Business
Address of the Business
To help you understand more about online businesses, let us see it from a perspective of a traditional brick and mortar business. Let us start with the business address.
In a traditional brick and mortar business, the address would be the physical address where the business is located. On the Internet, there is something similar. It is the URL – the uniform resource locator. It is also known as the web address.
Just like the brick and mortar business’ physical address is how people locate the business in the physical world, the web address is used to locate the online business on the Internet. For example, the URL or web address of Passive Online Revenue is passiveonlinerevenue.com. When you type this in a browser, you will be able to find this website.
Appearance of the Business
When you go to the physical address of a traditional brick and mortar business, you should find the physical structure where the business is running. It can be a building or an office.
In that structure, you will see physical aspects that represent the business; e.g. logos. You will also see physical elements such as doors, decorations, tables, chairs, staff working there, etc. All these in the physical world communicate to you about this business – what they sell, who they are, what is the brand, what is their value proposition, etc.
In the online world, it is about the same, except everything is online. When you reach the website, you will see the ‘front’ of the business, which is the homepage.
Usually, there will be an About page to show and tell you about the business and who are the people representing it. The products and services offered will all be displayed on the website just like how products are displayed in a showroom in the physical world.
And just like in the physical world, the website will have Contact information for you to reach the respective party in the business. Nowadays, with e-commerce, you can even make purchases online. Just like you make purchases at a physical store.
Types of Online Businesses
All online businesses have a website. What type of website it is relates to what type of online business it is. And vice versa.
For example, if the online business is to share a particular topic that the owner is an expert at, then it can be a Blog. If the online business is to sell or buy products and services, then it becomes an Ecommerce website.
Some websites are also strictly just a business front. What this means is that they simply provide information about the business. Any transaction will then be conducted offline, in the physical world.
An example can be a manufacturing plant’s website. The website will feature all the experience and expertise at manufacturing a particular physical product; such as integrated circuit wafers.
A blog is a website that provides information on a particular topic. For example, a travel blog like Asia Travel Gems contains useful information about cities in Asia, and where are the places to see, what are the good local food to try and where to find them as well as which are the good hotels to stay so that a traveler can get a good night’s sleep.

Really, this is nothing new. Before Internet, salespeople were already doing this. Except that they did not use a website. They went around, knocking on doors, did some personal selling, sold the products, and they received commissions for all their efforts.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of Affiliate Marketing:
It is actually based on Revenue Sharing. A Merchant, also called an Advertiser, has a product and wishes to sell more of this product. The Merchant offers Affiliate Marketers financial incentives to promote their product or service through an affiliate program.
The First Core Player
So, we have the first core player – The Merchant, or Advertiser. This Merchant or Advertiser can be a company selling a product such as airline tickets or hotel rooms. The Merchant or Advertiser then offers Affiliate Marketers a commission when a customer buys an airline ticket or book a hotel room.
The Second Core Player

When someone clicks on an Affiliate Link that is on The Affiliate’s website, and makes a purchase of the product or service on the Merchant’s website, The Affiliate earns a commission.

The Third Core Player
This is The Customer, also known as The Consumer. They start as a visitor to The Affiliate’s website. Usually, the website has content that is of interest to the visitor. Hence, the visitor visited the website for that reason.
The visitor consumes the content, and sees the links or banner ads. The visitor decides to take action, and clicks on the link or banner ad. This will take them from The Affiliate’s website to The Advertiser’s website.
When the visitor makes a purchase of a product or service on The Advertiser’s website, this is known as a Conversion. This means the visitor has been converted to a Customer.
The Affiliate then gets a commission.
But how does The Advertiser know to give The Affiliate a commission? Let’s talk about Cookies. Not the ones you have with your coffee or tea. This is a digital cookie. Please continue reading for more information about this digital cookie.
The Cookie – How Does It Work?
Firstly, let me explain what is a cookie.
When you sign up at an online site, for example Facebook, you will need to provide a username and password. Usually, below the fields where you fill this information, there is a checkbox that asks if you would like the browser to remember the login details.
When you check that box, you have just added a cookie to your browser. The cookie will remember your username and password for that site. So, the next time you visit the site, the login details will automatically be filled in for you. It is the cookie that does that.
When a visitor clicks on a link at The Affiliate’s website that goes to The Advertiser’s website, the information stored in the cookie is sent to The Advertiser’s website. The information tells The Advertiser who is The Affiliate, and if there is conversion, how much commission to give to The Affiliate.

Do you like to write? You can consider creating a Blog. It needs to be interesting, and filled with helpful information that people are looking for. Those people are the target audience for that particular niche.
As you create more quality and useful content, you start to gain authority. You build a following. There is a tipping point where things will progress and become much easier. When that happens, you get momentum. That is when money making opportunities happen.
You can start to generate revenue from advertisers, affiliate marketing, AdWords, promoting a product or service, and many other methods. The earning potential is vast. You can generate tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars per month.
Truth be told, it is not easy to get there. But it is possible. To be successful, it takes time and a lot of hard work. Also, your writing skill has to appeal to the readers. The most critical factor here is Time. When you look back a year from now, you will wish you started today. I know I did.
Sell Products on Your Own Online Store
Ecommerce is big and getting bigger.
Emarketer Reports that:
“Worldwide Retail Ecommerce Sales Will Reach $1.915 Trillion This Year Double-digit growth will continue through 2020, when sales will top $4 trillion
In 2016, total retail sales across the globe will reach $22.049 trillion, up 6.0% from the previous year. eMarketer estimates sales will top $27 trillion in 2020, even as annual growth rates slow over the next few years”
You can tap on that phenomenally huge market by building your own online store, and sell your products. It can be done by hiring a web development team, or using Shopify.
Shopify makes it easy to build your own online store. There is minimal hassle. They provide the framework, and you just create it using their tools. There is a cost involved, a monthly subscription fee for their services.
The other thing that will take up your time and effort is to find a product that sells well. This will involve sourcing for it, creating a brand, the logistics to ship it, store it, and fulfill sales order, and of course, the marketing to promote your brand and product.
Needless to say, you will need to spend time, effort and money to market your listing. An Online Marketplace listing is no guarantee that your product will be featured on their website.
Sell on Online Marketplaces
Another approach to sell things online is to leverage on Online Marketplaces. There are many of these, such as eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Qoo10, Lazada, and more.
When you sell on Online Marketplaces, you are do not really have an online store. Your products are listed on their sites. When customers make a purchase, you must fulfill it. The Online Marketplaces get a commission from each sale.
As you can see, this does take a lot of time and effort. This is because you are selling your product, which you need to source or produce. Then there is the cost to store the inventory. And when there is a purchase, you will need to send it to the customer.
For old, used or handcrafted items, you may not need to source or produce (except for those that you personally make). And of course, if it was yours, you already were storing it. The only other time and effort would be to pack it and send it to the customer when sold.
Sell on Classifieds
You can also sell your stuff on Classifieds such as Craigslist, Gumtree, and so on. It is usually free to join, and there are usually no commissions collected from these sites.
One major point of consideration is that most people now search for products on Online Marketplaces or Online Stores more than in Classifieds. I am not saying nobody does it anymore. The number is significantly less.
This method does take less time and effort. I see this more as another avenue to create awareness for your brand and product. And if you do get sales from this option, then good for you.
This can be a lucrative online business. You source or create your own product. Then store it at Amazon. Next, create a listing to offer the product to Amazon shoppers. When someone buys, Amazon will pack it and send it to the customer.
Due to the fact that this is your own product, profits are high. The costs are production of product, shipping to Amazon for storage, storage fees by Amazon, any online advertising costs, and the FBA and commission fees.
There is also the time and effort to find products to sell or to design and create your own products. In addition, the time to do administration and managing the logistics. If you do online advertising to promote your product, which you need to do, that will also take up a lot of your time, unless you outsource it.
Write, Publish and Sell Your EBook
Have you ever dreamed of writing your own book and publishing it? To be an author, and see your creations on the bestsellers list? With the Internet, this dream can now come true.
It can be fiction or non fiction as long as your writing skills are good, and people love to read what you produce. For fiction, it is all up to your imagination. For non fiction, books that teach people or help people about technical stuff can sell extremely well.
Once your book is ready, you an self publish it on platforms such as Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing or Apple’s iTunes Connect.
Needless to say, it will take a lot of time and effort to create that literary asset of yours. One thing you must note is that this market is saturated. So competition is strong. Yet, when you are successful, it can be a great source of income.
There are people who start a YouTube channel, post videos about themselves or around a topic. And these people are making a lot of money doing that. It was reported that YouTube star PewDiePie was earning $7.4 million in revenue.
For a start, you do not really need to invest in expensive video equipment. Just a video camera or camera with video recording capabilities or you can even use your smartphone to record videos. I have even seen videos with poor quality reach millions of views.
All you need to do is choose the option to monetize your videos. When your videos are viewed, and ads are played, you are on your way to earning money from this source.
How much time and effort is needed depends on how successful you want your channel and videos to be. I have seen people who just upload the videos as it was recorded, and do not make any money.
Then there are people who make a bit of effort such as add background music, edit the video, and create attractive thumbnails. As I said, it was a little bit more effort, and as such the money is a little bit more than nothing.
By now, I think you know where I am going with this. If you treat this as a business, and put in a lot of time, money and effort, you will see good returns.

The trend towards gig economy is here, and growing. Businesses are looking for people with specific skills that can help their businesses to complete tasks on a part time or freelance basis. If you have any of those skills that are in demand, you can get those jobs and earn money.
Websites like Fiverr, Upwork, ODesk are where you can find these part time or freelance jobs. You will skills such as graphic design, accounting, social media, web development, SEO and so on in demand.
It takes time to be successful and make decent income with this option. You have to build a good reputation, and get great reviews. As time goes by, you will get more jobs and hence more income.
Your knowledge and your expertise is now in demand. There are various platforms to offer your hard earned experience with others. One of them is to create courses on sites like Udemy and SkillShare.
What you do is to create a curriculum based on a subject that people are eager to learn. For example, it can be a course about SEO and how to use it to Get to First Page on Google.
This approach to make money online is gaining popularity, and as a result there is more competition. But it is still a great source of income if you succeed.
It will require time and effort to think of a topic that people will need, then create the curriculum, and produce the lessons (usually in video format). If there are handouts, you will need to create those, too.
The advent of mobile devices herald the rise of mobile Apps. And with that, the opportunity to make money.

Are you good at photography? Or creating videos, music or illustrations? There are sites, for example Shutterstock or iStockPhoto, where you can either sell these media or get royalties for the use of each photo, video, music or illustration.
Of course, the media must be what people need or are looking for. They must be something they can use for their marketing needs. And this means it will require you to be creative.
In addition, this takes time to build. So, you will need persistence and lots of effort to succeed.
There are companies out there in the World Wide Web who will pay people to take surveys. This is an easy way to make money online. All you have to do is sign up, and take surveys.
Companies like CashbackResearch.com will pay you because they want to get valuable consumer and user data. The downside is that the money earned is not a lot.
But if you already have good full time income or you are a student, and some extra pocket money is nice to have, then this is an all right option. After all, if you are going to spend time on the Internet, why not make some money at the same time, right?
Passive Online Revenue – Final Word
As you can see from all the above options, there are lots of opportunities. Finding reputable sources to generate income is a challenge.
There are unscrupulous Internet Marketers wants to make money from you rather than help you make it. Over the years, I have seen my fair share.

At the same time, let me elaborate a little further on what I consider as passive income. Passive income is not something where you do nothing from start to finish, and expect to reap lots of money. It is usually not a get rich quick scheme.
As you have read in my explanations above, a lot of them require lots of hard work. Time and effort, and most times some money, are needed. At least in the initial stages. After the groundwork is done, the result is that there is less effort no effort to be made. Then it becomes passive income.
For example, putting up a video on YouTube requires some hard work at the start, such as recording the video, editing it, adding voice over and background music, digital marketing, and so on. But after some time, very little or no effort needs to be put in. The views continue to increase. You get passive income.
If you continually need to put in a lot of time and effort, then it is not truly passive income. Especially if you are exchanging your time and effort for money. And here are some that are not really passive income. They are still considered as a few ways to make money online. But if it is passive income you are after, these are not quite it.
