Years ago, I first heard the term Black Friday. Then a few years later I discovered Cyber Monday. I was awed. To me, it was fantastic that there is now Black Friday and Cyber Monday! This means more great deals offered for a longer period of time, even the entire weekend till Monday!

In this article, I will explain What is Cyber Monday? How Did the Term Cyber Monday Come About? What Happens on Cyber Monday? Now, that we are in the age of the Internet, what happens on Cyber Monday on the Internet?

Again, What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday

Technically, it is the Monday after Black Friday that happens after Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. It is not an official holiday. It is more of an online sales event.

From the research I have done, I found out that what happened was that many Americans did not have time to buy what they wanted during Black Friday. They missed out on many great deals.

Some were too busy to shop. Some had low-speed Internet that did not help with the shopping experience. So, when they returned to the office on Monday, they used the high-speed Internet connections available at work to do the shopping.

Of course, there were those who already shopped during Black Friday. They simply continued shopping on Monday. This was encouraged by businesses continuing the offers from Black Friday or presented new and better offers on Cyber Monday.

Together with Black Friday, Cyber Monday became part of the yearly four-day weekend shopping extravaganza.

how did cyber monday get its name?
How Did the Term Cyber Monday Come About?

In 2005, two people named Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman came up with the term Cyber Monday. They released a press release titles ‘Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year’.

The same press release cited a study which found that 77% (77 per cent) of online retailers experienced a substantial increase in sales on the Monday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. They noticed this trend where businesses were continuing to offer major discounts and promotions on that Monday. And they decided to coin it as Cyber Monday.

The term caught on. And today, online retailers all over the world use this term.

What Happens on Cyber Monday?

Shopping Online

This is interesting. I found out that many people continue their Christmas shopping when they return to work on the Monday following Black Friday. Some did that because they did not have fast or secure Internet connections at home. Some were too busy to shop during the Black Friday event.

Whatever the reasons, the main point is that there is a significant number of people still shopping on the Monday after Black Friday. They do it especially to get big discounts for the Christmas gifts they were getting.

And since 2005, sales during Cyber Monday has been growing year by year. In 2014, the sales recorded was $2.65 billion. In 2015, it increased a little to $2.98 billion. And in 2017, it jumped to a record $6.59 billion! I cannot imagine how much it will get this year in 2018?

What Happens During Cyber Monday on The Internet?

One of the reasons for the success and continued growth of Cyber Monday is the advancement of technology. eCommerce has matured, and grown much over the past years.

In the past, people were uncomfortable with buying things online. Plus, the weak security on the world wide web has made people more cautious.

Today, with better security and improved eCommerce experience, people are more willing to make purchases online. I am one of those people. Are you?

Due to the Internet, Cyber Monday is now celebrated in many other countries such as Argentina, Canada, Chile, Colombia as well as many parts of Asia and Europe. It is now equal or even bigger than Black Friday.

  1. I found your article extremely interesting since I never really knew how Black Friday and Cyber Monday got started, so in other words the retailers made up these shopping bargain promotions to encourage shoppers to start shopping earlier for Xmas.
