Secret Shopper is a Sights on Service, Inc. It was founded in 1990. So, it has been around for 30 years. It is headquartered in Valley, Minnesota, USA.

Secret Shopper is a business that offers market research. They offer many services, such as online evaluations, onsite evaluations, and on the phone evaluations.

Of the three, the one that is of interest today for you is one of the intelligence services provided by the company. It is called mystery shopper or secret shopper.

You will need to have a digital camera or a scanner. This is so that you can either take a photo of your proof, or scan the proof, of doing the assignment. Proof is usually a receipt or a business card.

One last important requirement is that you must be at least 18 years old.

Go to their website. From the menu, select Shoppers option. Then click Sign Up.

Fill in the information required. This includes your name, age, address, etc. You will be asked to complete a basic test to certify that you qualify as a secret shopper.

After you pass the test, you get a Shopper ID, and a password that you can use to log in. You will also receive email notifications of available shopping jobs.

How Do You Make Money from Secret Shopper?

You can join them as a mystery shopper.

What you will do is to shop at a store assigned to you. Sometimes you will be asked to check out the store’s products, the store itself, the service level, or all of that and more.

You are actually conducting market research. You are collecting data for the store.

The reason the role is called a mystery shopper or secret shopper is because you do not reveal to the store or the staff there that you are working for Secret Shopper. Or that you are doing market research for the store they are working for.

It is all done anonymously. You behave like a regular customer, and find out the information that is required for the job.

After your work is done, you are to submit a report of your experience to Secret Shopper. They will collate the information collected, and submit to their client. In this case, it will be the store that you shopped at.

How You Will Be Paid?

You will be paid by Secret Shopper for the work done. The rate for the work done varies from assignment to assignment. Some pay more. Some pay less. According to Secret Shopper, you can earn anywhere between $15 to $25 per hour.

You will be paid by checks on the 20th of each month. This is only for those living in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. For international shoppers, you get paid via PayPal on the 20th of the following month.

There are scammers who claim to represent Secret Shopper. Be careful of these unscrupulous people.

Here are some of the scams warned by Secret Shopper:

Joining Fee Scam

Scammers will ask you to pay a fee to join Secret Shopper. Note that it is free to join, and Secret Shopper does not and has never charged anyone to join.

Cashier’s Checks or Money Orders Scam

Another scam is someone claiming to be a Secret Shopper representative. And you receive cashier’s checks or money orders. You are then told to cash it, and wire the majority of the funds via MoneyGram or Western Union.

Do Not Do This! You can lose money or be accountable for bounced checks by your financial institution.

Phone Text Scam

You receive a text message that asks you either for money or personal information. Note that Secret Shopper does not send unsoclicited text messages to individuals.

There are some people who submitted complaints against Secret Shopper. You can find these at sites such as glassdoor and sitejabber.

Many of the complaints are about very late payment. Some of the complaints even suggested that the lateness in payments were done intentionally.

But, to be fair, on these same sites there are good comments too.

VERDICT: Legit … BUT

So, there you have it. A way to make money by shopping. It is a legitimate way to earn a side income. And the company is a legitimate business.

But you will still be exchanging time for money. You will be working hard, and putting in a lot of time and effort. All for very little money earned.

Yup. $15 to $25 per hour is not a lot of money to be made. If you do the work in 3 hours, you only earn at least $45, and at most $75.

Do not forget your costs, too. The cost to travel there, the equipment costs, and any other operating costs to do the job.

Overall, you will not make enough to earn a decent living. It can be a nice side income. If you love to shop, that is additional perk.
