How to Pin an Image or Video to Your Pinterest Board?

Hi there! It’s awesome that you would like to learn How to Pin an Image or Video to Your Pinterest Board. But, as part of your social media marketing efforts, if you are just starting out with Pinterest marketing, I do suggest reading the first and second part of this Pinterest Training series. They are How to Create a Pinterest Business Account and How To Create A Pinterest Board.

And if you have already read those two articles and ready to continue with this lesson – Great! Just one more note – this Pinterest Training series is part of the Learn How To Do Digital Marketing topic. It is a complete guide of all digital marketing you need to learn whether you are starting as a digital marketer, an experienced one or even if you are a business owner.

Let’s begin this post now, and start with how to prepare your pin.

Prepare a Pin

Before adding an image or video to your Pinterest Board, it is best to prepare your pin.

First, it is vital to know that a pin can be an photo or video from your website, article or blog post. So, after you create and publish a new article or blog post, you can pin any photos or videos from that web page to your Pinterest Board.

Pinterest Pins
Pinterest Pins

Of course, you can also pin an image or video from a website, article or blog post that is not yours. Even then, you need to make sure you prepare the details for the pin.

And here are steps to prepare your Pin:

Image or Video of the Pin

First, you have to have an photo or video to pin. As mentioned above, it can be from your website that is an article or blog post. So, you must create that article or blog post with images and videos first.

Image That Can Be Pinned To Your Pinterest Board
Image That Can Be Pinned To Your Pinterest Board

It can also be an article or blog post from someone else’s website. This means you are going to share an image or video from that source. It is not your original work.

Of course, if you like, you can just pin an photo or video that is not from an article or blog post.

Title of the Pin

Next, you need to prepare the title for your pin. This is what Pinterest users will read. So make it attractive. And relevant to the topic of your image or video.

Pins with Title and without title
Pins with Title and without title

As you can see in the image above, a pin with title is more attractive. Which photo would you click on?

Remember to use keywords for the title. It can help Pinterest users to find your pin. Or be shown on their news feed because of the topic relevance.

Description of the Pin

Next, prepare the description for the pin. Write attractive description that will get people to click on your Pin and save it. When people click on your pins, you get increased views. When people click on your image or video, you drive traffic to your website.

Add hashtags in your description. This will help your pin be found by Pinterest users when they search for a particular topic. Do not add more than 20 hashtags. Also, write specific and descriptive hashtags that are meaningful and relevant to your image, topic, niche and industry.

When a Pinterest user searches for a hashtag, the freshest pins with that hashtag will appear at the top of the feed. This raises the chance that people will click on your pin. They may even save it. The best would be they visit your website.

Tip: Description is limited up to 500 characters only

Destination Link

This is the website address where the image or video originates from. The URL can be automatically added if you are pinning from a website or manually added by copying the URL and pasting it in the Destination Link field.

If it is your article of blog post, you should have no problem remembering it. But if it is a curated article, then take note of the URL. Jot it down somewhere.

How to Pin An Image or Video to Your Pinterest Board?

There are many ways to Pin to your Pinterest Board:

Method Number 1 – Pin From Your Website an Image or Video Stored on Your Computer

This method is when you have already published an article or blog post on your website. And the images and videos that you have added to that web page are on your computer. So, you would like to add a pin to your Pinterest board by uploading that photo or video from your computer. Here is how you do this:

Go to your Pinterest Dashboard (see screen shot below)

Pinterest Dashboard Create Pin
Pinterest Dashboard Create Pin

Click on Create Pin. And the Create Pin popup appears (see screen shot below)

Create Pin Details Popup Window
Create Pin Details Popup Window

Add an image or video from your computer. Earlier, in the Prepare a Pin section, you would have prepared this photo or video on your computer. Click the arrow up icon to find the image or video on your computer and add to this Pin.

OR

You can also drag and drop an photo or video into this grey box area (where the arrow up icon is) to add it to this Pin.

Remember the Title, Description and URL that you prepared in the above Prepare a Pin section? Here is what you do with the prepared information:

From the above Title that you prepared, add the text into the Add your title field (see Pin Details screen shot for reference).

From the above Description you prepared, add the text to the Tell everyone what your Pin is about field (see Pin Details screen shot for reference)

From the Destination Link prepared above, add the URL into the Add a destination link field (see Pin Details screen shot for reference)

Next, you have to select a board that you would like to add this pin on. At the top right corner of the Create Pin popup window, Click Select (see screen shot shown below for reference)

Create Pin popup window - Select Board

A drop down of all the Boards you have created will appear (see screen shot shown below for reference)

At this time, if you would like to create a new board for this pin, you can choose the Create board button instead. Then follow the prompts to create your new board.

And that is it. Your pin is saved on your Pinterest Board. If you like to see how the pin looks like, simply click the option to See it now.

Click See It Now to see your saved pin

You will get to see your pin and details that you have added. See the screen shot below to get an idea how your pin will look like.

As you can see from the screen grab above, all the details that you have added will be in the pin. This includes the destination link which will lead the Pinterest users to your website. In effect, this drives more traffic to your website.

Method Number 2 – Pin an Image or Video Direct From Your Website Using a Social Media Plugin

If you have installed a social media plugin, one of the buttons would be for Pinterest. Below is how the Pinterest Pin button option would look like for the AddThis plugin.

This is just one of the many social media plugin options. And one of the many Pinterest pin buttons available. All these pin buttons on these social media plugins enable you to pin an photo or video directly to your Pinterest board.

Simply click on the option. And you will be brought to the next screen where you are presented some images. These photos are grabbed from the web page, and are for you to choose which image or video you would like to pin on your Pinterest board.

Choose an Image to Pin and Click Save

Choose an image that you would like to add to your Pinterest board. Move your mouse over the photo, and click Save.

Just like how it is described above in Method 1, you will be asked to Choose a board to pin this image or video to. Select the board and click Save. It will immediately be saved on your choice of board. You can also view the pin by clicking See it now.

Method Number 3 – Pin an Image or Video Direct From Your Website Using a Pinterest Browser Button

Another way to pin an image or video to your Pinterest board is to use the Pinterest Browser Button. This is a button that you download into your browser.

When you attempt to pin an photo or video from a web page, and you have not downloaded this button before, you will be asked if you would like to add this button to your browser, as shown below.

Download and Get Pinterest Browser Button

Or you can simply choose to download this button as a plugin or extension from the browser store. For example, I downloaded mine from the Chrome extension store, as shown below.

Add to Chrome Pinterest Save Button
Add to Chrome Pinterest Save Button
Pinterest Save Button on Browser

After adding this button, it will appear at the top of your browser area.

With this button on your browser, whenever you are on a web page, you can pin any image or video from that web page to your Pinterest board. Simply click on the Pinterest Browser button.

As mentioned in Method 2, all the images and videos on that web page will be displayed on the next screen. Simply choose a photo to save to your Pinterest board.

Just like the steps mentioned above in Method 1, you choose and save to the board of your choice.

Method Number 4 – Pin an Image or Video Using the Save From Site option

This option is available only on the desktop version of Pinterest. When you pin an image or video from a web page, and you are brought to the Create Pin window, there is a Save from site option on the bottom left area. See the screen grab below.

Save from site option on Create a Pin window for Pinterest
Save from site option on Create a Pin window for Pinterest

Click the Save from site option.

Enter the URL of the website into the field. You can either manually enter the URL or copy and paste the URL.

After you submit the URL, you will be brought to the page where all the images and videos grabbed are displayed. Choose the photo or video you would like to pin.

Then just like how the steps are mentioned in Method 1, you can select the board you wish to pin to. Click save and you have added a pin from that website to your Pinterest board.

And there you have it – more than 1 way for you to add an image or video to your Pinterest board.

What is a Pinterest Board?

The idea of Pinterest is to have an online space like a bulletin board. Many bulletin boards in fact. And for users to pin as many images and videos to these boards as possible.

And the idea is to pin images and videos that are topics of interest of the users. Hence, the combination of the word, Pin, and the word, Interest into Pinterest.

Pinterest Boards
Pinterest Boards

As you can see from the above image, my travel Pinterest account – Asia Travel Gems, has many boards related to travel. For example, Honeymoon Destinations, Bangkok Food, Things to Do in Indonesia, Malaysia Travel, and many more.

Inside each of these boards are images and videos from travel articles that I found on the World Wide Web. Many are also from my travel blog – Asia Travel Gems.

I pin images and videos of interesting travel articles as well as my own travel blog posts. These pins will appear on Pinterest users news feed. And when they find it interesting, they will click on the pin.

And when they see the pin, and are interest to find out more, they can click on a link provided. The link will take them to the blog post or article.

You can see how this can bring traffic from Pinterest to your website. When I post my travel articles from Asia Travel Gems, and people click to see the pin and then to my travel blog, I gain traffic. And with traffic, I can convert visitors to customers.

How to Create a Pinterest Business Account?

How to Create a Pinterest Business Account

How to Create a Pinterest Business Account?

Previously, we discussed about 10 Useful Social Media Marketing Tips for Your Business that is part of the Learn How to Do Digital Marketing series. And in that article, I mentioned about the importance of choosing which social platform to focus on. Especially if your team is small or there is only you doing all the work.

Pinterest is the chosen social media vehicle for my online businesses. Today, I will show you How to Create a Pinterest Business Account?

Pinterest Increased Traffic to My Website

I focus more on this platform, and it is showing great results. In just a few months, I have increased my followers and unique viewers from a few to thousands. This has resulted in increased traffic to my websites.

As you know, large volume of traffic is important. It is how we can generate sales and income from our websites. Visitors are opportunities to convert into them into customers.

As such, with a Pinterest marketing strategy that brings great results, many people have asked me to provide training on how I did it. So, here it is.

But this is just the first of a series of Pinterest training. The ultimate secret of how I get thousands of followers and viewers on Pinterest will be the last part of this series of training.

I designed the training to be so because in order to get there, to find out how I managed to be successful with Pinterest, you need to learn the basics first. In other words, to get there, you have to start from here.

So let’s begin, shall we?

Why Do You Need to Create a Pinterest Business Account?

I know right? Good question. I too asked the same when I started with Pinterest. Back then, as I researched about this, I realized there are many good reasons for a Pinterest Business Acccount. Here they are:

Pinterest Business Account is Free
  • It is FREE! You read this right. There are no additional charges to have a Pinterest Business Acccount. And as you discover more good reasons below, you will surely come to the same conclusion that I had. And that is to get a Pinterest Business Account.
  • Access Pinterest Analytics. This will help you improve your Pinterest Marketing. With analytics, you will know what pins your audience likes, what are the trending posts, and when to post for maximum results.
  • More control of your branding and content attribution. Branding is important as it will serve long term success for your business. And with a Pinterest Business Account, you can claim attribution for all your pins. As such, you gain increased brand exposure and brand awareness.
  • You can claim your website, Etsy page, and other social accounts. This also improves branding. Claiming your online assets such as your website ensures your name and profile photo appears with every Pin.
  • Advertise on Pinterest. Again, for increasing brand exposure and brand awareness, advertisements can be the vehicle to achieve that. Plus, promotions can drive more traffic to your website. Again, as mentioned above, this is opportunity to convert visitors to customers. As such, this can boost sales and revenue.

Awesome! Now How to Create My Pinterest Business Account?

After reading all the benefits, I bet you are ready to create your Pinterest Business Account. There are a few ways to do it. And here they are:

I Already Have a Pinterest Account. How Do I Add the Pinterest Business Account to This Existing One?

  1. Simply log in to your personal Pinterest Account
  2. Click on the more options – this is the three dots at the top right corner of your dashboard (see image below)

  6. Enter your business name
  7. Enter your business email
  8. Enter your business website

The following are options. You can choose to do it later.

If you are not migrating the boards, then you will be asked to create your first pin.

I Do Not Want to Link The Business Account to My Personal Pinterest Account. How Do I Do That?

There is a choice whether you want to link your personal account to your business account. If you wish to link them, the steps are above. If you do not, and wish to create a totally new business account, then follow these steps:

  1. Log out of your personal account if you are still logged in
  2. Go to this link – pinterest.com/business/create/
  3. Complete all required fields:
    a. Email address
    b. Password
    c. Business name
    d. Business type
  4. Then click Create account
Create Pinterest Business Account

Another method for this option

After you log out, and there is a window like the one on the left (or above if you are reading this on a mobile phone), look for the Create a business account option.

Click on it.

Follow the prompts, and complete the fields in Step 3 above.

Then click Create account.

Note – This option will require you to sign in to your personal and business accounts separately.

I Have a Personal Account. Can I Change It To a Business Account?

Sure! Just follow these steps.

  1. If you are not in your personal account, then log in to it
  2. Go to pinterest.com/business/convert/
  3. Complete all required fields:
    a. Business name
    b. Business website
    c. Business type
  4. Then click Create account

I Have Created My Pinterest Business Account. What Next?

Once your account is created, you should update your account details. Again, click on the more options button. Just a gentle reminder, this is the three dots at the top right corner of your dashboard. Then select Edit Settings, and click on that option.

The 1st tab you will see is Edit Profile (see image below).

Edit Profile of Pinterest Business Account
Edit Profile of Pinterest Business Account

Remember to update the following:

  1. Change profile photo – This should be your logo or a photo that reflects the niche or industry of your business. E.g. if you are in the pet industry, you can add a photo of pets as your profile photo. Or if your niche is dogs, then a photo of a dog. Of course, ideally it is best to put your logo here. So that people can be aware of your brand and remember your brand. And whenever you post a pin or people share your pin, they can see your logo that goes with the pin.
  2. Display name – This is the name you would like people to see when they see your pin or visit your account.
  3. Username – Make this your brand name. E.g. you can see from the image above, I use asiatravelgems for Asia Travel Gems. This is so that when I share my Pinterest account, people can see my brand name.
  4. About your profile – good to write a detailed profile to tell people what your board is about.
  5. Location – This is optional – To me, this is only useful if you have a store location or office space where people can visit and buy stuff.
  6. Featured boards – When you have a good range of Boards, this option is good to do. You can feature the boards you believe either need a lot of visibility or are very popular. This is shown on the front page when people visit your account. In a way, it tells people what your account is all about and will encourage more people to follow you. Click on Edit if you are ready to feature some of your boards.

Take your time to explore the rest of the tabs. It is always best to fill as much of your profile as possible. But of course, bear in mind what you really want people to see about your brand.

Be selective. You can always add the details later when you feel the time is right.

Now that you have created your Pinterest Business Account, go read my posts about How to Create a Pinterest Board. And then How to Add an Image or Video to Your Pinterest Board.

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - header

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Curious about Affiliate Marketing? Would you like to Learn What is Affiliate Marketing? If your answer is yes, then you have come to the right place. Before we continue, I would like to mention that this blog post is part of a series titled – How to Start and Grow Your Successful Online Business. After reading this article, you might like to check this page out. It offers many more articles to help you learn how to have a successful online business.

It can be said that Affiliate Marketing is one of the ways to truly earn Passive Income. It is where you can wake up the next morning, have your breakfast and coffee as you open your laptop. Then see emails and reports of commissions that you have earned overnight. All the earnings you made while you slept!

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - vacationYes, you read it right! This is one of the ways you can make money while you sleep, or while you are at the gym, having a night of fun out with your friends, and even while you are on vacation. The latter actually happened to me.

I was on vacation in Malaysia. Every morning, before going out to see the sights and eat really delicious food, I would check my emails on my laptop. And it was fun to see commissions made while I was asleep as well as out having fun.

So, What is Affiliate Marketing?

In summary, it is to promote other people’s products on your websites. When a visitor makes a purchase of any of the products, you earn a commission.
Here’s a definition from Pat Flynn:

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s (or company’s) products. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make – Pat Flynn

Really, this is nothing new. Before Internet, salespeople were already doing this. Except that they did not use a website. They went around, knocking on doors, did some personal selling, sold the products, and they received commissions for all their efforts.

Now, with the Internet, you can Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing, and how to do it easily.

Here’s a more detailed explanation of Affiliate Marketing:

It is actually based on Revenue Sharing. A Merchant, also called an Advertiser, has a product and wishes to sell more of this product. The Merchant offers Affiliate Marketers financial incentives to promote their product or service through an affiliate program.

The First Core Player

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - MerchantSo, we have the first core player – The Merchant, or Advertiser. This Merchant or Advertiser can be a company selling a product such as airline tickets or hotel rooms. The Merchant or Advertiser then offers Affiliate Marketers a commission when a customer buys an airline ticket or book a hotel room.

The Second Core Player

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - The AffiliateThe next core player is the Publisher, also known as The Affiliate. This can be an individual or a company. The Affiliate promotes the product of the Merchant or Advertiser on a website. Take a look at this website to see an example of Affiliate Marketing website –  Asia Travel Gems.

When someone clicks on an Affiliate Link that is on The Affiliate’s website, and makes a purchase of the product or service on the Merchant’s website, The Affiliate earns a commission.

Most times, the Advertiser will provide The Affiliate with creative communications such as links, banner or text ads. The Affiliate will incorporate these marketing communications on their website. Again, visit this website, and this time notice the banner ads shown – Asia Travel Gems.

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - Banner Ad
Banner Ad indicated by red circle and pointed by arrow

The Third Core Player

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - CustomerThis is The Customer, also known as The Consumer. They start as a visitor to The Affiliate’s website. Usually, the website has content that is of interest to the visitor. Hence, the visitor visited the website for that reason.

The visitor consumes the content, and sees the links or banner ads. The visitor decides to take action, and clicks on the link or banner ad. This will take them from The Affiliate’s website to The Advertiser’s website.

When the visitor makes a purchase of a product or service on The Advertiser’s website, this is known as a Conversion. This means the visitor has been converted to a Customer.

The Affiliate then gets a commission.

But how does The Advertiser know to give The Affiliate a commission? Let’s talk about Cookies. Not the ones you have with your coffee or tea. This is a digital cookie. Please continue reading for more information about this digital cookie.

The Cookie – How Does It Work?

Learn What Is Affiliate Marketing - CookieFirstly, let me explain what is a cookie.

When you sign up at an online site, for example Facebook, you will need to provide a username and password. Usually, below the fields where you fill this information, there is a checkbox that asks if you would like the browser to remember the login details.

When you check that box, you have just added a cookie to your browser. The cookie will remember your username and password for that site. So, the next time you visit the site, the login details will automatically be filled in for you. It is the cookie that does that.

Affiliate marketing uses cookies too. The cookie is used to remember where you have arrived from to The Advertiser’s website. It would include The Affiliate’s unique affiliate code.

When a visitor clicks on a link at The Affiliate’s website that goes to The Advertiser’s website, the information stored in the cookie is sent to The Advertiser’s website. The information tells The Advertiser who is The Affiliate, and if there is conversion, how much commission to give to The Affiliate.

How Do The Affiliates Promote Their Websites?

Affiliates use effective Internet Marketing methods to promote their website. These would include organic SEO, paid search engine marketing (PPC), email marketing, content marketing, video marketing, and more.

If you are new to Affiliate Marketing, and even more unfamiliar with Internet Marketing Strategies, you can join reliable programs like Wealthy Affiliate where they will provide basic to advanced training.
